Vodaland Canada
Many Canadians ask us how to install pavers without the back-breaking work of stripping away their lawn. When you use a Vodaland grid system, you can lay your pavers directly over the grass without any removal, which is a major advantage over traditional stone or brick.
Whether you are looking to create a walking path or need a stable base for a new shed, the process is generally the same. Through careful planning and final anchoring, you can easily add our EasyPave or HEXpave systems to your yard without any digging.
Before you start, follow these three significant steps to ensure a proper installation:
Preparing to lay pavers
Unlike other paving options, our grid systems can be placed directly on the turf. You must ensure the area is smooth and that all debris and rocks have been removed from the site.
For the EasyPave system, utilizing our specialized anchors is key to ensuring the units have a solid foundation and that no "floating" occurs on top of the grass. The grass will continue to grow naturally through the grid openings.
For HEXpave, we recommend starting on a freshly sprinkled or slightly damp lawn. This provides a bit more give to the ground and makes the initial placement much easier. Both systems will contour to the shape of the ground, so double check that the grade of the area is to your liking before you begin.
Connecting the pavers
Once the area is prepped, connecting the units is the easy part. Each system snaps into the next. If you need to make custom cuts, it is best to do so before the grids are fully joined together; a simple handsaw is usually all you need.
To speed up the process, connect the pavers before you begin any anchoring. Once the layout is connected, walk the perimeter to ensure the design is exactly where you want it. From there, you can move on to the final securing phase.

Anchoring and filling your pavers
Anchoring is not always required for flat, gravel-filled surfaces, but if you are laying them directly on grass or on a slight incline, it is a vital step to avoid shifting. We recommend using one or two anchors per grid; the extra holes are provided for those who have cut the pavers into custom shapes.
While most traditional installations require a gravel or soil fill, you can skip that step when placing these directly on the grass. The existing lawn will grow up through the cells to fill the space naturally. With a little bit of patience, you will have a reinforced, beautiful paving system that lasts for years.
