DIY Guide Trench Drains

Easy way to install a Trench Drain | Vodaland Canada

Trench drains, also known as channel drains, are an excellent option for managing water runoff or standing water. In the Canadian climate, these systems are essential for handling heavy rain and the massive volumes of water produced during the spring thaw. You will typically find them in areas where excess water accumulates, such as driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots. The trench itself is slightly sunken into the ground with a protective cover to ensure water enters while debris stays out.

Trench drain systems offer a versatile solution for numerous applications. Constructed from a range of materials, each system provides specific characteristics suitable for different uses, with various channel depths, widths, and load ratings available to meet provincial and municipal standards.

Types of trench drains

  • Slot drains: These are a popular choice because they provide significant drainage without compromising aesthetics. Slot drains boast a large internal volume with a minimal surface opening, allowing for high capacity water flow with a sleek, unobtrusive look.
  • Easy home system: This is a great solution for those wanting a lightweight installation for pedestrian only use. These channel drains are easy to work with and versatile enough for most residential needs. With no need for adapters, this system is perfect for DIY projects around the home.
  • Industrial trench drains: These are designed to handle the toughest applications. With load class ratings ranging from C to F, industrial channels support heavy loads from forklifts, pallet jacks, and heavy transport trucks.

The step-by-step process of how to install a trench drain

Installing a trench drain is a proactive way to protect your home or business from water damage. If you take the time to plan your project and make precise measurements, the installation can be completed without much hassle. Once you have a clear work area, follow the instructions below.

1. Dig the trench

Using the required tools, dig out the trench. Be sure to create 4 inches of space on all sides (including the bottom) to allow for a proper concrete encasement.

2. Prepare the trench

Once you have excavated the trench, remove any stones or debris. Fix a string line at the finished channel height to ensure your drain is not too high or too low. Spread a 2 inch layer of sand across the bottom and use a shovel to press it down until it is flat and even. This serves as the foundation for your trench.

3. Prepare the catch basin

If you are using a catch basin, locate the pipe stud in location and use a hole saw to drill a hole that fits your pipe size, then connect it. If you are not using a basin, move to the next step.

4. Place the drain at the appropriate height

Place your channel drain in the trench, ensuring it aligns with the string line from Step 2. Connect your drain pipe to the outlet. Once the outlet is connected, caulk the joints to prevent any leaks into the surrounding soil.

5. Tape the openings

When the caulking is dry, tape the drain channel and the side grate locks. This prevents wet concrete from seeping inside the system during the pour, which could cause blockages.

6. Backfill the trench with concrete

Now it is time to pour the concrete. This is a three step process:

  1. Float the channel 1/16 inch below the finished layer of concrete.
  2. Backfill the rest of the trench with at least 4 inches of concrete on both sides.
  3. Smooth the concrete out and let it cure completely.

7. Remove the tape

After the installation is finished, remove the protective tape. Once the opening is exposed, securely place the drain cover over it to complete your system.
