Why are Manhole Covers Round Safety and Design | Vodaland Canada

Manholes are ubiquitous parts of our urban landscape that often pass underfoot completely unnoticed. Yet, these access points and their covers are a crucial part of our cities. Manholes provide essential access to the underground utilities that keep Canada running—including electricity, telecommunications, water, and sanitation.

Because they serve such vital functional needs but are so often overlooked, we’re going to take a closer look at manholes and answer some commonly asked questions about these omnipresent pieces of our built environment.

Why Are Manhole Covers Round?

The foremost reason why the standard manhole cover is circular is actually rooted in safety and engineering.

Because manhole shafts are typically cylindrical, a round cover cannot fall through the opening. A square or rectangular cover, if turned diagonally, could potentially drop through the hole. This design feature eliminates the risk of a heavy lid falling onto workers below ground—an extremely serious health and safety hazard.

Furthermore, round manhole covers offer superior structural strength. Their shape transfers weight evenly across the entire circumference. For a square manhole cover to support the same heavy vehicle loads, it would require significantly more material and complex engineering to prevent the corners from becoming weak points. Additionally, a cylinder is the strongest shape for the hole itself, as it resists the compression and pressure from the surrounding frozen or shifting earth better than any other form.

How Heavy Are Manhole Covers?

Manhole covers vary in weight depending on their size, material, and required load class.

  • Traditional Cast Iron: Standard cast iron covers typically weigh between 100 to 250 lbs. This weight is intentional; it ensures the lid stays firmly in place under traffic and discourages theft, yet it remains manageable for utility crews with the right tools.
  • Modern Composite/Plastic: More modern solutions, such as those made from high-strength PPE plastic, can weigh as little as 25 lbs. Despite being lightweight, these are engineered to be strong enough for vehicles to drive over, making them an excellent choice for residential and light-commercial applications.

Why Are Some Covers Square Instead of Round?

You may occasionally see square or rectangular lids and assume they are manholes. However, these are usually access panels for shallow utility boxes rather than deep-shaft manholes.

These panels provide quick access to cable connections, electrical junction boxes, water shut-off valves, or secondary sewage cleanouts. Because these boxes are shallow, there is no risk of a worker falling into a deep shaft, so the safety benefit of a round lid is less critical. Square panels are often used in these cases because they align more easily with sidewalk pavers and tiles.

What Are Manhole Covers Made of?

Cast Iron: The traditional standard. It is incredibly durable, resistant to the corrosive effects of road salt, and can withstand the heaviest "Class D" loads from transport trucks.

Composite and PPE Plastic: These are becoming increasingly popular in Canadian landscaping and residential projects. They don't rust, they are easier to install for DIYers or small crews, and they offer a more modern aesthetic for driveways and patios.
