Roads - Manhole Covers

Vodaland’s ductile iron manhole covers are precision-engineered for the rigorous demands of Canadian infrastructure, offering superior strength-to-weight ratios for civil engineering applications. These heavy-duty covers are the ideal solution for securing round manholes and access points across municipal roadways, highway shoulders, and commercial sites. Each unit features a specialized corrosion-resistant coating, ensuring long-term structural integrity against road salts and moisture. Designed for seamless installation and a secure fit, our ductile iron range is available in various load classes (including H-20 and H-25) to meet strict provincial transportation standards. These covers are built to withstand Canada’s volatile climate and extreme freeze-thaw cycles, performing reliably in temperatures ranging from -60 °C to +60 °C. Prioritize site safety and high-performance durability by choosing Vodaland for your next roadway or civil development project. What is it made from?

Our heavy-duty manhole covers are manufactured from high-grade Ductile Iron. Unlike standard cast iron, ductile iron offers superior strength-to-weight ratios and enhanced impact resistance. This makes them ideal for Canadian environments, as they can withstand extreme temperature fluctuations and the heavy vibrations of roadway traffic without cracking.

What is the purpose of it?

These covers provide secure access to critical underground infrastructure, including municipal sewer systems, stormwater management, electrical vaults, and telecommunications. Specifically engineered for Canadian civil applications, our covers meet high load class ratings (such as D400 and E600) and are designed to support the weight of heavy commercial vehicles, buses, and transport trucks. They ensure public safety while protecting essential utility networks from unauthorized access.

How does it open?

Vodaland’s heavy-duty covers are designed for both security and ease of maintenance. To open, remove the single locking bolt and lift the lid using the integrated hinge system. The lid is designed to lock automatically at a 90-degree angle for worker safety during inspections. For complete removal, the lid can be slid off the hinge entirely when held at a specific 5–15-degree angle. This ergonomic design allows for quick access while ensuring the lid remains securely seated under high-speed traffic conditions.

How do I install the cover?

Proper installation is critical for longevity in road applications. The frame features multiple bolt-down points along the flange to secure it to the concrete manhole riser or catch basin. For civil projects, we recommend applying a high-strength bedding mortar or sealant between the frame and the structure to prevent water infiltration. Finally, the frame must be encased in reinforced concrete or asphalt, ensuring it sits perfectly flush with the finished road surface to prevent damage from snowplows and to ensure a smooth transition for vehicles.

Available load classes for our Manhole Covers:

Load Class A - pedestrian foot traffic

Load Class B - Residential vehicle traffic (no parking) and yard equipment

Load Class C -Commercial vehicle traffic, residential vehicle parking, buses, and medium duty commercial equipment.

Load Class D - Highway road traffic and standard commercial equipment.
