Erosion Control - GeoCell
The Vodaland Geocell system is a high-performance plastic erosion control grid engineered for superior soil stabilization and aggregate confinement. As a premier geogrid solution, it effectively prevents the migration of sand, gravel, stone, mulch, and wood chips, providing essential slope protection and stability for heavy-traffic areas like commercial parking lots. This versatile ground grid offers robust soil reinforcement for environments susceptible to erosion, making it an ideal choice for driveway grids, retaining walls, foundation stabilization, and horse paddocks. Whether utilized for farming projects, athletic field slopes, or large-scale civil engineering applications, this cellular confinement system ensures long-term durability and structural integrity for any erosion control or landscaping project.
Are the geocell grids flexible? Can they curve and contour around obstacles for slope stabilization?
Yes, our geocell grids are manufactured from high-density, flexible geosynthetic materials that allow the system to effortlessly conform to the natural contours of your landscape, including steep hills and winding curves. For effective erosion control, the use of rebar J-hook anchors provides essential support, ensuring the cellular confinement system maintains its structural integrity. The specific height of the cell walls is a key factor in determining how effectively the ground grid adapts to complex terrain and irregular site conditions.
What infill aggregates can I use with the geogrid, and is a sub-base required?
While our erosion control product is compatible with a wide variety of infill materials—including soil, sand, and mulch—Vodaland recommends using crushed stone for applications involving vehicle loads or heavy pedestrian traffic. For optimal soil stabilization and drainage, 3/4-inch gravel is the ideal size for our geocell grids.
To ensure long-term ground reinforcement, we recommend installing a 2-3 inch gravel base layer beneath the grids. This sub-base is critical for permeable pavement applications and areas subject to heavy traffic to prevent shifting and ensure proper load distribution.
Can the geocell grids be cut or attached together for custom slope protection?
Absolutely. Vodaland designed these grids to be fully customizable for any slope erosion project. While the standard geocell section measures 8.4 ft x 19.7 ft, it can be easily trimmed to size using a standard utility knife. To join multiple sections for larger soil reinforcement projects, simply use heavy-duty zip-ties through the perforated cell walls. This modular design offers an economical and efficient construction method for any site footprint.
Do I need anchors for soil stabilization?
We strongly recommend anchors for every geocell installation, as they are necessary to keep the cells expanded during the aggregate pouring process. We offer cost-effective ground anchors in 12-inch and 18-inch sizes. For our 8-inch high cellular confinement system, the 18-inch anchor is required. You can choose between galvanized steel or high-density polymer anchors; both are engineered to secure the ground grid on flat surfaces or provide permanent slope protection against gravity and hydraulic forces.
Do I need a geotextile layer?
We highly recommend using our non-woven geotextile filter fabric as a separation layer. Installed beneath the geocell, the geotextile improves structural integrity, maintains high permeability for drainage, and acts as a weed barrier, preventing sub-grade soil from mixing with your clean aggregate infill.
Will geocell work to reduce slip on sloped driveways and improve traction control?
Yes. Creating a stable, sloped driveway can be a challenge, but geocell technology transforms loose gravel into a durable, drivable surface. By utilizing cellular confinement, the grid prevents the "shoving" or migration of gravel caused by tire traffic and rainwater runoff. This ensures that tires maintain proper grip on steep inclines, providing a reliable erosion control solution for both residential and commercial driveways.
How much does it cost to install a geocell erosion control system?
Geocell is one of the most cost-effective methods for gravel stabilization and soil erosion prevention. The unique diamond grid design allows for rapid installation and quick infill, reducing labor costs. Because it utilizes simple tools and standard aggregates, the overall project cost remains significantly lower than traditional retaining walls or paved surfaces.
Can geocell be used for flood prevention and stormwater management?
Yes, geocell grids are highly effective for both flood control and long-term soil reinforcement. The system stabilizes embankments and shorelines, ensuring soil remains in place during high-velocity water events. Geocell can be deployed quickly to create permeable flood barriers, offering a more sustainable and durable alternative to traditional sandbags for erosion prevention and environmental protection.
2-Inch GeoCell: can hold only pedestrian traffic and can be used up to 10-15 degrees in slope.
4-Inch GeoCell: can hold vehicle loads (with gravel only) and can be used up to 33 degrees of slope.
8-Inch GeoCell: can be used for any vehicle traffic and all slope percentages up to 45 degrees. Primary application of this geocell is for retaining walls.
We offer 2 product lines of ground stabilizers that serve primarily the same purpose. Understanding their differences will guide you in choosing the most ideal for your project.
Height & Load Bearing:
Geocells are designed with focus on containing the aggregate that is receiving heavy loads and preventing erosion. For this reason, the grids have more height and it's focal point is tensile strength. (Height Options: 2-inch, 4-inch, 8-inch)
Permeable Pavers are designed with focus on withstanding the heavy loads themselves, and the aggregate is there just for consistency with the surrounding terrain. For this reason, the pavers are a thicker plastic and require less height. (Height Options: Hex = 1-inch / Easy = 2-inch)
Compatible Aggregates
Geocells can use any aggregate for erosion control purposes, but only gravel can be used for vehicle loads or heavier. A gravel base is also required.
Permeable Pavers can use any aggregate for any situation, including for vehicle loads. A fine gravel or sand base is optional with the pavers, but is recommended for the most ideal install.
Installation
Geocells are best for large-scale projects that have rectangular shapes. The grids cut easy for specific sizes.
Permeable Pavers are best for smaller-scale projects that have non-standard shapes. The 3 square foot grids provide easier customizability for your project. Less base, aggregate, and configuration means that these grids are the quickest install of the two.
Erosion problems? Our Geocell is the solution. This erosion control system is made of Polyethylene and has a lifetime warranty. We supply three sizes (heights) of Geocell:
- 2” geocell – for home/landscaping/gardening applications. Often used for walking pathways.
- 4” geocell – for heavier loads, like parking pads, driveways, hill sides, shallow retaining walls and common erosion problems.
- 8” geocell – for steep erosion control, driveways (filled with 3/4" and larger gravel), retaining walls.
Sections come with 8.4 x 19.7 ft size (164.5 sq ft) and can be easily stretched and anchored down to the ground. Then, simply fill the geo ground grid with material that’s suitable to your application, such as soil, sand, crushed gravel, or large gravel and compact it.
