Pedestrian Catch Basins

Manage surface water safely and efficiently with Vodaland’s Catch Basins, designed to protect pedestrian areas from flooding and pooling. Compact and durable, they seamlessly integrate into sidewalks, patios, plazas, and walkways without disrupting the landscape design. Built from high-quality, weather-resistant materials, they provide long-lasting performance in both residential and commercial settings. Pair them with Vodaland trench drains for a complete, reliable drainage solution pedestrians can trust.

What are ADA-compliant catch basins made of?

Our basins are constructed from high-grade Polypropylene (PP) plastic, chosen for its smooth internal surface which prevents biofilm buildup and odors in high-traffic pedestrian areas. To meet strict accessibility standards, these basins are paired with specialized Heel-proof grates—available in reinforced plastic, stainless steel, or ductile iron—featuring narrow slot openings that prevent small objects from falling through while maintaining high water intake.

What load class and grate style do I need for an ADA-compliant path?

For pedestrian walkways and building entrances, an A-Class (Pedestrian) rating is standard, though B-Class is often preferred for areas where maintenance carts or security vehicles operate. The critical factor is the slot width: ADA standards typically require openings no larger than 1/2 inch (13mm) to ensure canes and crutches don't get caught. Our "Heel-proof" line goes a step further, offering even tighter spacing for high-fashion footwear. See our compliance guide here:

How does the stackable basin system work for urban sidewalks?

In city centers or commercial entries, underground utilities like fiber-optics and electrical lines often sit just below the surface. Our stackable basin system offers modular depth, allowing you to bypass these obstructions or reach deeper storm mains. By stacking the units and removing the floor of the upper basin, you create a custom-depth sump. For high-traffic areas, we recommend a structural silicone seal between sections to prevent any soil erosion that could cause the surrounding pavers or concrete to settle and create a trip hazard.

How do I maintain and clean a heel-proof basin?

Maintenance in public spaces is focused on hygiene and debris removal. Because heel-proof grates have smaller openings, they effectively screen out larger litter like cigarette butts and bottle caps. Simply lift the grate and empty the internal debris basket. For areas near restaurants or cafes, we recommend a quick spray-down to remove organic spills that could make the surface slippery or attract pests.

Where are these catch basins typically installed?

These basins are the gold standard for public plazas, hospital ramps, school entrances, and retail shopping centers. They are strategically placed in "high-flow" pedestrian zones where safety is the priority. By integrating seamlessly with the surrounding floor finish—whether it’s tile, pavers, or brushed concrete—they provide invisible protection against puddles and ice patches, ensuring a safe, "slip-free" path for all users.

Our load classes are derived from A to E on our Catch Basin systems.

Load Class A - Light duty, pedestrian foot traffic

Load Class B - Medium duty traffic, light vehicles, sidewalks and residential parking

Load Class C - Heavy duty traffic, buses, garages, general commercial applications

Load Class D - Heavy duty trucks, gas stations, forklifts, highways

Load Class E - Extra heavy duty, hard tire forklifts, industrial areas, storage terminals

Load Class F - Special duty, airport runways, structures with extreme loads

We have four options as far as material for the gratings;

Plastic - This will be for your home / garden area with no loads of heavy value going over it at all

Galvanized Steel - Light traffic such as bicycles, riding lawn mowers, and carts

Stainless Steel - Can be driven on , cars, trucks, and heavy duty vehicles
