What is an ADA compliant trench drain?

ADA (American Disability Act) compliance is required for most specified public pedestrian trench drains. This is necessary to meet safety requirements for those with accessibility issues. ADA compliance refers more accurately to the grate used within the trench drain and the size of opening it features. The opening on the grates can be no grate than ½” in width. If the grate openings are elongated, then then openings must be oriented so that the long dimension is perpendicular to the dominant direction of travel. The term heel-proof is also frequently used and means that the opening has openings between ¼” and 5/16”. Therefore, any grate that is heel-proof, also is ADA compliant.

What is the length of each trench drain?

Every Vodaland ADA compliant trench drain is 1-meter (3.28ft) in length. Each ADA trench drain can be connected together for longer runs, and units can be cut to match specific sizing requirements.

Is the title width an internal or external dimension?

The width categories and all other width categories represent the internal width of channel, and the same applies to the depth sizes shown for each channel. External dimensions vary for each type of channel, and customers can view external dimensions through the spec drawings provided on each product page.

How do I connect the trench drains together?

We design all of our public pedestrian trench drain channels to be connectable with each other via male-to-female connections. Depending on model, your pedestrian trench drain may either “click” together, or simply fit together for connection. It is very important that all connections are silicone sealed.

How do I connect piping?

For piping, Vodaland designs our channels with outlets options on the bottom, sides, and ends. These outlets can be attached to 4” Schedule 40 PVC with an adapter we sell separately. If other piping is to be used, we recommend connecting them to the outlets via rubber couplings which are sold externally.

Do these need to be encased in concrete?

Vodaland recommends that all our ADA trench drain systems be encased in concrete for best reliability. Certain scenarios may not allow for the use of concrete, and in those cases customers may change the recommended installation method at their own discretion.

What is the max/min temperatures that the plastic channel can handle?

Our ADA compliant trench drains are suitable for temperatures between -40 to +45 degrees Celsius. Our installation method accounts for seasonal temperature changes through the use of expansion joints.

Do your trench drain channels have slope?

Our ADA compliant trench drain solutions come with either neutral slope channels or 1% pre-slope channel drains. Both types are available and can also be used together to create longer lengths of run.

What types of grates do you offer for ADA compliant trench drains?

We offer almost all grate types we offer with ADA compliant options so we can meet the needs of any trench drain application. Those classified as “load class B” are designed to hold wheeled traffic and can be used for public spaces and for certain commercial activities. We offer ADA grates in ductile cast iron, galvanized steel, and stainless steel, so that you can find the aesthetic solution which best matches your surrounding concrete surface.
